Letting learning lead the way

Over the Christmas period, I gave myself permission to slow down. In that space, I unpacked the concept of slower pedagogy and what it truly means for my practice. This reflection challenged me to reconsider how I curate, implement, and record our kindergarten program—not as a fixed document, but rather as a living, responsive framework that grows with the children.

Our program has shifted to a more post-led approach. While our significant learning focuses remain guided by the QKLG 2024, these are now intentionally positioned as anchors rather than directives. They underpin and scaffold a learning path that is genuinely child-led.

We have introduced what we call tiles of suggestions. These include prompts to stretch our thinking, ideas for capturing children’s and families’ voices, ways to document ongoing learning, inspiration for provocations and invitations to play, and ideas for shaping learning spaces. Importantly, these are not prescriptions—only inspirations. Our day will unfold as directed by the children’s ideas, interests, and the lived experiences of our community.

This approach allows us, as educators, to truly scaffold children’s thinking, support their learning, and nurture a sense of wonder and curiosity. It aligns closely with my personal philosophy—that I am an unobtrusive observer, entering play when invited, and a resource facilitator who thoughtfully provides materials, questions, and opportunities that extend children’s inquiries and explorations.

Throughout my career, I have continually searched for the balance between compliance, expectations, service philosophies, and what feels authentically me as an educator. As I place the final touches on our Term 1 Program, I feel a strong sense of clarity.

This feels right. Not rushed. Not repetitive. Not overwhelming.

Instead, it creates space—for deeper relationships, more purposeful moments, and meaningful engagement as children begin their kindergarten journey. And that, for me, is where real learning lives.
